La Scala, Carnegie Hall and the Alte Oper Frankfurt: Jochen Rieder is now a regular guest at leading opera houses and on the concert stage, working with some of the world’s most prestigious soloists and orchestras. With his passion for the great works of the German and Italian Romantic periods in particular, he has conducted numerous award-winning CD recordings and concerts that have been acclaimed by audiences and critics alike.
Jochen Rieder has built up a wide-ranging repertoire and gained valuable experience working with some of the most prominent singers of our time, including Peter Seiert, Waltraud Meier, Leo Nucci, Agnes Baltsa, Jonas Kaufmann, Renée Fleming, Nina Stemme, Thomas Hampson, José van Dam, Matthias Goerne, Matti Salminen and Michael Volle.
Jochen Rieder has enjoyed a long artistic collaboration with the tenor Jonas Kaufmann. Together they have performed at venues including La Scala in Milan, the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Barbican Centre, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, the Munich Philharmonie, the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, the Konzerthaus in Vienna, the KKL in Lucerne, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, the Peralada Festival, the Seoul Arts Centre in South Korea, the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, Switzerland, the Royal Opera House in Muscat, Oman, the Konzerthaus in Dortmund, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the Movistar Arena in Santiago de Chile, South America, at the Teatro Real in Madrid, at the Regensburg Castle Festival, at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, at the Osaka Festival Hall, at the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, at the Waldbühne in Berlin, at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, at Carnegie Hall in New York, at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, at the Arena di Verona, as well as in Hong Kong and Taipei.
He conducts internationally renowned orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala Milano, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester Berlin, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI di Torino, the Prague Symphony Orchestra, the Residentie Orkest The Hague and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to their joint concerts around the world, several recordings were made with SONY: in 2014, a CD and DVD of operetta arias recorded with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (awarded two gold and one platinum disc, as well as the ‘Echo Klassik 2015’ award), in 2015, the DVD recording of the Puccini concert from the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, which was also broadcast live to numerous cinemas worldwide; in 2016, the DVD “Dolce Vita – My Italy” with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI di Torino; and in 2018, the CD and DVD ‘An Italian Night’, live from the Waldbühne, once again with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and awarded the OPUS KLASSIK 2019.
Other CD and DVD releases in 2020 included *Mein Wien* (SONY Classical) with Jonas Kaufmann and Rachel Willis Sorensen, *It’s Christmas* (SONY Classical) with Jonas Kaufmann and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, and in 2023 *The Sound Of Movies* (SONY Classical) with Jonas Kaufmann and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra.
In 2015, the NAXOS label released a recording of orchestral songs by Gustav Mahler featuring the Swedish baritone Peter Mattei and the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jochen Rieder, and in 2020, SONY Classical released the recording “Arias for Josepha” featuring the soprano Sarah Traubel and the Prague Philharmonia conducted by Jochen Rieder.
In 2024, Deutsche Grammophon released the CD *Breathe*, featuring Hera Hyesang Park and the Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice, which won the OPUS KLASSIK award.
Having grown up in the Palatinate, Jochen Rieder pursued a traditional career as a conductor, which took him from Karlsruhe via Bremen to the Zurich Opera House.
