With a remarkable career spanning decades, Elīna Garanča is an internationally renowned mezzo-soprano. Her professional journey from Riga, Latvia, to the most prestigious opera houses in the world has been marked by extraordinary artistry and dedication.
Acclaimed by critics and adored by audiences worldwide, she has become a prominent figure in the world of classical music. Among many roles, she is especially celebrated for her portrayal of Bizet’s Carmen, with The New York Times calling her “the best Carmen in 25 years.” Recent highlights include her debut as Judith in Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle at the Teatro di San Carlo and in a concert version with the MET Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, as well as on tour in South Korea and Japan. Last year, she made her debut at the Bayreuth Festival in the role of Kundry, becoming the first Latvian singer to perform on this prestigious stage.
As an exclusive artist with Deutsche Grammophon (DG), she released her first solo lieder album after nine solo albums, followed by the album Live from Salzburg, released in December 2021. This album captures two exceptional performances at the Salzburg Festival in summer 2020 and 2021 with the Vienna Philharmonic and Christian Thielemann. On her latest Deutsche Grammophon album, When Night Falls, released in 2024, Elīna Garanča reflects on the many facets of the night.
Elīna is the recipient of numerous national and international awards and holds the honorary title of “Kammersängerin,” bestowed upon her by the Vienna State Opera in recognition of her commitment to the house. Since her debut at the Vienna State Opera in 2003, she has performed in over 170 productions in eighteen roles.
