The South African soprano Golda Schultz is internationally celebrated as one of the most talented and versatile artists of today. Equally at home in leading operatic roles as a soloist with some of the world’s most renowned orchestras and conductors, Schultz is widely praised for her “warm sound and sensitivity in phrasing.” She trained at The Juilliard School and the Opera Studio of the Bavarian State Opera, and quickly achieved success on both sides of the Atlantic with early operatic appearances as Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier) at the Salzburg Festival, Contessa Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro) at Glyndebourne Festival Opera, and Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) at the Metropolitan Opera and the Vienna State Opera.

Highlights of her 2024/25 opera season include Anne Trulove in Olivier Py’s production of The Rake’s Progress at the Opéra National de Paris, Contessa Almaviva at the Bavarian State Opera (both conducted by Susanne Mälkki), Agathe (Der Freischütz) at the Semperoper Dresden conducted by Georg Fritzsch, and Pamina at the Metropolitan Opera under Evan Rogister. Her concert engagements include a return to the BBC Proms to perform Fauré’s Requiem with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Stéphane Denève, Strauss’s Four Last Songs with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich conducted by Paavo Järvi, Ravel’s Shéhérazade with the Orchestre de Paris conducted by Stanislav Kochanovsky, a Der Freischütz tour with the Kammerakademie Potsdam and Antonello Manacorda, as well as Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under Klaus Mäkelä. Her recital performances include appearances at the Fundació Victoria de los Angeles and the Temporada de Música i Dansa in Andorra la Vella in collaboration with Gary Matthewman, as well as the Gstaad New Year Festival with Jonathan Ware.

Among her major operatic successes have been Micaëla (Carmen) at the Opéra National de Paris and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Contessa and Liù (Turandot) at the Vienna State Opera, Agathe at the Bavarian State Opera, Vitellia (La clemenza di Tito) at the Salzburg Festival, Clara in Jake Heggie’s Isn’t Life Beautiful? at the San Francisco Opera, and Madame Lidoine in Barrie Kosky’s acclaimed production of Dialogues des Carmélites at Glyndebourne Festival Opera. As a regular performer at the Metropolitan Opera, she has appeared in roles including Clara (Porgy and Bess), Nanetta (Falstaff), Sophie, Anne Trulove, and Adina (L’elisir d’amore). Last season, she made role debuts as Juliette (Roméo et Juliette) at Dallas Opera and as Donna Anna (Don Giovanni) at the Zurich Opera House, and house debuts at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte) conducted by Alexander Soddy, and her farewell performance as Sophie at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden conducted by Joana Mallwitz.

On the concert stage, Schultz has recently performed Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Gewandhaus Orchestra and Andris Nelsons to mark the 200th anniversary of the work’s premiere, Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 with the New York Philharmonic under Gianandrea Noseda, Haydn’s The Seasons with the Tonkünstler Orchestra conducted by Ivor Bolton, and Luonnotar with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Nelsons. Schultz premiered Strauss’s Four Last Songs with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and Gustavo Dudamel, made her debut with the New York Philharmonic performing its Brentano-Lieder under Santtu-Matias Rouvali, sang Mozart’s Requiem with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, performed Schubert’s Mass in E-flat major at the Salzburg Festival with Franz Welser-Möst, and sang Luonnotar with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Lahti Sibelius Festival 2024 under Dalia Stasevska. In 2020, Golda Schultz starred in the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms alongside Dalia Stasevska and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, with a specially curated program broadcast live on radio and television to a global audience of millions.

Golda Schultz’s debut solo album, This Be Her Verse, released on the Alpha label, explores the worlds and inspirations of female composers from the Romantic era to the present day, including a new commission by Kathleen Tagg and Lila Palmer, curated together with her long-time pianist Jonathan Ware. In her second and current release, Mozart, You Drive Me Crazy!, Schultz, in collaboration with Antonello Manacorda and the Kammerakademie Potsdam, explores the complexity of the female experience in the three da Ponte operas.

As a celebrated concert duo, Golda Schultz and Jonathan Ware have performed together at the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin, the Wigmore Hall, the Cologne Philharmonie, and will perform this fall in San Francisco.

Golda Schultz will be the soloist at the concert on August 5, 2025.
